KYOTO — Enka singer Sayuri Ishikawa, 51, took part in her first outdoor concert this week when she sang at “Kyoto Onpaku 2009” held at Umekoji Park in Kyoto.

Ishikawa stepped up to the stage in a splendid white kimono and did her best Ichiro impersonation—extending her right arm out and lining up her microphone with the crowd—before singing her classic “Tsurugaru Straits – Scenes of Winter” which brought the audience of some 13,000 to their feet. She then revealed she had spoken to the Seattle Mariners hitting machine shortly beforehand, with Ichiro surprised by Ishikawa’s first outdoor performance and telling her he had just landed in Florida.

Ichiro was so inspired by Ishikawa’s performance at NHK’s end-of-year Red and White Singing Contest in 2007 that he decided to use a re-recorded version of her classic “Amagigoe” as his at-bat song at Safeco Field in 2008. |
